A whisky like a walk through the woods
X-MAS CALENDAR – DAY 6: GLENMORANGIE A TALE OF THE FOREST
Once again Glenmorangie proves its love of experimentation: the new Glenmorangie A Tale of the Forest is the first whisky made from malt dried over botanicals. It is inspired by the ever-changing nature that the Glenmorangie Director of Whisky Creation experienced during his forays through the forests of his native Scotland. Scents, sounds and the sight of the forest fueled this experimental Limited Edition. Dr Bill Lumsden used an ancient method of kilning the barley malt over forest extracts such as pine needles and juniper, as well as wood smoke. A few years ago, he had a whiskey in mind that captured the wonderful experience of a walk in the woods. At the same time, he recalled the old method of Highland whisky makers to dry the barley malt with different forest ingredients. A wide variety of botanicals were experimented with and Dr Bills really loved the wonderful flavors that juniper berries, birch bark and heather brought to the malt in combination with some peat. In this way, the unusual aromas of pine needles, juniper and a hint of smoke were created. Glenmorangie A Tale of the Forest tastes like a peppery, lively flavor unfolds abruptly: peppermint, menthol, eucalyptus, pine, tree resin, angelica root, bitter orange with some aromatic wood smoke.
But as we slowly enter the festive season the question arises: with what special drink constellations can we indulge our dearest? Here are our delicious suggestions:
Dr Bill’s Forest Old Fashioned
All you need are the following ingredients: 50 ml Glenmorangie A Tale of the Forest Whisky, 10 ml juniper syrup, 2 Spritzer Angostura Bitter.
The preparation is as simple as effective: by only using whiskey, juniper syrup and Angostura bitters into a mixing glass over ice, stir and strain into a tumbler glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with juniper berries and orange zest – enjoy!
“Into the Woods”
A forest berry sour that with its light freshness, whiskey makes anyone and everyone palatable, best to use regional ingredients.
This would require the following ingredients: 40 ml Glenmorangie A Tale of the Forest Whisky, 1 tablespoon of pickled wild berries 1 teaspoon of forest honey,1 teaspoon verjus or fresh lemon juice. And then you just have to add whisky to the pickled wild berries in a tumbler glass, stir in the wild honey well with the verjus or lemon juice. For the final touch: add a large ice cube, stir everything well again and serve.
