“THE BREATH OF A HOUSE IS THE SOUND OF VOICES WITHIN” AT AKADEMIE DER KÜNSTE

vor 10 months

The Akademie der Künste in Berlin is abuzz with excitement as it hosts the much-anticipated exhibition, “The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within.”

This showcase, featuring works by 35 international fellows of the Young Academy, promises a journey through transdisciplinary artistry, social commentary, and immersive experiences.

Inspired by the profound words of American architect and artist John Hejduk, the exhibition’s title encapsulates the essence of the artistic exploration within. Visitors are invited to delve into a world where the boundaries between art forms, cultures, and socio-political landscapes blur, giving rise to a symphony of voices echoing from within the walls.

The Young Academy, known for its commitment to nurturing emerging talents and fostering cross-cultural dialogue, has brought together a diverse cohort of artists with biographical roots spanning continents. From Germany and Europe to Iran, Ukraine, Lebanon, Japan, Canada, and beyond, these creatives converge in Berlin to share their unique perspectives on the world.

The artworks on display span a multitude of mediums, including photography, video, installations, textiles, sculptures, drawings, and paintings. Each piece serves as a portal into the artist’s psyche, offering glimpses of personal narratives, collective memories, and reflections on contemporary crises and conflicts.

Photographs capture fleeting moments of intimacy and vulnerability, while video installations immerse viewers in dynamic narratives. Spatial and auditory installations challenge conventional perceptions, inviting audiences to reconsider their relationship with space and sound. Textile works, sculptures, and paintings evoke emotions and provoke thought, exploring themes of identity, resilience, and resistance.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the two-day event program, where the human body becomes a focal point of expression. Through concerts, readings, workshops, film screenings, and performances, artists engage with audiences in thought-provoking dialogues, sharing their insights and experiences.

Traditional aesthetic rituals intersect with contemporary expressions, creating a rich tapestry of cultural exchange and creative exploration. The exhibition serves as a testament to the power of art to transcend boundaries, amplify voices, and inspire change.

“The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within” is not just an exhibition; it’s a celebration of diversity, resilience, and the transformative power of art. As visitors navigate through the labyrinth of creativity at the Akademie der Künste, they are invited to listen closely, for within the walls, the voices of the artists echo, speaking truths that resonate across borders and generations.

The exhibition can be seen from March 1st – April 1st, 2024 at Akademie der Künste in Berlin
