The Fräulein Weekend Edition

vor 4 years

From this week’s fashion shows to the latest political news… Here is what was on our radar at Fräulein – of what to do, watch and read this weekend.

Another week of lockdown lies behind us and although a few rays of sunshine would be quite nice, we are actually almost relieved that the good weather is still waiting for us post-lockdown. But there is a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel. The German government has announced freedoms for vaccinated people, if the last Covid-19 vaccination is administered 14 days prior. The curfew, as well as contact restrictions, are then to be lifted. Another glimmer of hope: increasing vaccinations and restrictions finally seem to be having an effect and the numbers are dropping, especially here in Berlin.

After activists, including Fridays for Future, filed a lawsuit against the Climate Protection Act of 2019, the German Constitutional Court ruled that it is partly incompatible with our Basic Law – the legislature must now make improvements and grant climate protection. You better save our planet…

Also causing discussion is TV host Markus Lanz, who invited right-wing politician Alice Weidel on his show. Talking to right-wingers – a sensitive topic. Thanks to fact-based argumentation and a virologist who can hold against twisted numbers, she was not given a platform to spread ideological opinions.

Now, here are some suggestions on what to spend your time on this weekend:

Sunday is Mother’s Day…

… and here is small reminder. Whether biological mother or the woman who means a lot to you. Treat someone with flowers, with jewelry or simply with a delicious breakfast (in bed?). Celebrate yourselves, let yourselves celebrate and spend a nice day with those who are a mother for you.

Céline Sciamma’s Tomboy on MUBI

MUBI has already saved a few evenings during lockdown. If you’re looking for quality, you’ll usually always find it on this streaming platform devoted to independent, arthouse, and experimental films – especially since the platform expanded its permanently available films at the beginning of the pandemic. As of this week, the second film by Céline Sciamma, director of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, is now available to watch. The film examines issues of gender identity with sensitivity and empathy. Featuring newcomer Zoé Heran in the role of the eponymous “tomboy.” Watch here.

Rick Owens x Dr. Martens

Dr. Martens teamed up with Rick Owens for a collaboration that is well worth seeing. After the two brands already released styles in March, the second drop follows tomorrow, on May 8. Reminiscent of rock-and-roll and the grunge aesthetic, our favorite is the distorted version of the 1460 platform silhouette. In a pearly suede, the platform silhouette is adorned with Owen’s iconic pentagram lacing.

Framing Britney Spears

Those who have not yet seen the documentary should do so as soon as possible. The focus is on the legal paternalism of the singer and pop icon by her father. On Instagam, the singer herself writes that she feels honored to be the subject of many documentaries, but criticizes them sharply: “These documentaries are so hypocritical… they criticize the media and then do the same thing”. Where to stream: Amazon Prime.
